Vehicle Routing Company Roadnet Technologies Announces Release of RTS v3.50

15 December 2011

We are pleased to announce that Roadnet Transportation Suite v3.50 is now in limited release. All of our new customers will receive this version as well as any customer interested in upgrading to the latest and greatest in logistics technology. This version of our route planning software has several enhancements that are briefly noted below.

An improved Service Time Maintenance Tool provides better clarity when updating a Location’s service time with actual data captured by drivers. The route optimisation tool can also be used by companies that do pick-up and retrieval routes, providing greater flexibility across several different industries.

Due to evolving business models and governmental regulations regarding workers and breaks management, additional functional enhancements have been made to expand the Automatic Breaks Management capability in Roadnet®.

When there’s a truck full of cartons, unfortunately sometimes one or two get overlooked at the point of delivery. As more deliveries are made and the piles dwindle, drivers may find items that were meant to be delivered to stops that were already done. Now, rather than returning these items back to the depot to have them sent out on the next day’s route, you can use the Return to Stop and Redeliver option in MobileCast®.

If you’re a company that has a more stable routing model, you might be routing with Territory Planner®. In that case, analysis enhancements have been made such as adding a new Location Delivery Cost report and being able to differentiate Depots in the map view.

In addition to these new features, we are introducing a new Mid-Route Sourcing capability for the solid waste industry. This vehicle routing feature culminates hundreds of hours of research and development to solve the complex problem of routing and servicing roll-off containers  a big challenge for solid waste companies not adequately handled with standard delivery routing algorithms. Stay tuned for more information to come in future blog posts regarding the new feature for the solid waste industry.

Roadnet Technologies Named To World's Largest Software Company List

23 November 2011

Baltimore, MD (November 15, 2011) – Leading transportation software provider Roadnet Technologies was included in Software Magazine’s Software 500 ranking of the world’s largest software and service providers. The ranking, which is based on total worldwide software and services revenue for 2010, can be viewed at www.softwaremag.com.

Roadnet Technologies, a leader in route planning and scheduling software, was named in the “Top 10 Companies in the $30 - $50 million” and “Top 10 Overall in Revenue Growth” categories, based on the achievement of $35 million in software and service revenue and a 141.2% growth rate last year. Approximately 27 percent of the 2011 Software 500 companies are privately-held and more than 100 appear on the list in 2011 for the first time – two distinctions held by the Baltimore-based company.

Roadnet Technologies provides worldwide fleet management and route optimization solutions for hundreds of thousands of vehicles in a broad range of industries such as foodservice, beverage, paper, medical, waste management, textile and energy. Roadnet’s fleet management applications and logistics software provides strategic territory and street-level route plans, multi-stop vehicle routing and scheduling, real-time wireless dispatch, vehicle telematics, fuel management, and real-time vehicle GPS tracking.

“We consider this national recognition an extremely high honor and attribute this achievement to the continued strong efforts and successes of our entire team,” explained Len Kennedy, Chief Executive Officer of Roadnet Technologies, a leader in vehicle routing and fleet management software. “Our company has continued this momentum through the first half of 2011, which represented the best two quarters in our 25-year history based on same-year sales volume and a 97% customer retention rate,” he added.

“The Software 500 is a quick reference of vendor viability,” stated John P. Desmond, editor of Software Magazine. “The 2011 results show that revenue growth in the software and services industry was healthy, with an approximate 10% growth from the previous year’s list,” he added.

Founded in 1983, Roadnet Technologies was acquired by United Parcel Service in 1986 and was known as UPS Logistics Technologies for more than 25 years. Thoma Bravo LLC, a $4 billion private equity firm headquartered in San Francisco, purchased the UPS division in late 2010 and re-established the corporate name.

British Lead set to boost routing and scheduling with Roadnet

01 August 2011

British Lead is to use Roadnet™ from 121 Systems to plan its UK wide delivery and collection routes.

British Lead produce new lead sheeting – with each sheet being almost 100% recycled. The lead sheeting is refined using scrap materials. These resources are collected from scrap collection points or demolition sites. Once new lead sheets have been produced, British Lead will use Roadnet to optimise their efficiency when delivering finished goods to their customers.

As part of the Eco Bat Technologies group - the world’s largest recyclers of lead - the company is keen to boost its routing and scheduling.

The company has been recycling scrap lead since 1932 and the new planning software is likely to be an important part of its future. Thanks to Roadnet’s routing and scheduling technology, British Lead’s fleet of vehicles can be routed more effectively from its four depots. This will lead to a reduction in the amount of time spent on planning routes.

It’s not only the bottom line that will benefit from the added routing and scheduling muscle provided by Roadnet. The software will allow the company to manage the movement of lead - from the collection of scrap materials to the delivery of finished goods to customers. Environmental impacts play a major part in British Lead. Having been accredited an ISO14001 for their environmental engagement reflects this priority.

With the use of Roadnet from 121 Systems, it looks as though British Lead will continue to lead the way in its industry.

Biffa Reduced mileage with more Intelligent Routing

11 July 2011

With 64 operating centres and hundreds of vehicles, waste management leader Biffa was keen to keep a lid on its fuel costs. A successful initial trial of Roadnet in 2009 gave the business a great way to do just that. In the trial at one of its operating centres, Biffa saw a 30% cut in its fuel bills, plus:

  • Reduced mileage and more intelligent routing- leading to lower CO2 emissions and better customer service.
  • Overtime almost eliminated- Biffa kept the same number of staff while increasing its productivity.

Great results, but they’re just the start. Biffa now plans to roll Roadnet™ out across the whole business, covering its routes for commercial waste, glass recycling and dry mixed recycling. The company estimates that the whole system will pay for itself in just 18 months.  The rubbish cost cutting looks likely to continue - 121 Systems is currently working on ways to help Biffa lower the costs of moving its skips.

Andy Robertson, Logistics Manager at Biffa, said:

“I would recommend Roadnet from 121 Systems to anyone struggling with unwieldy routing problems.  I can’t fault the system or the customer services team, who have been extremely helpful from start to finish.”

Walkers Crisps Merchandising Gets a Boost

11 February 2011

Walkers Crisps merchandising gets a boost from Roadnet™ Transportation Suite.

The UK’s favourite crisp brand, Walkers will be using logistical software Territory Planner™ to allow them to plan sales journeys. PepsiCo UK & Ireland who own Walkers, have purchased the sophisticated kit, which is part of the Roadnet Transportation Suite.

Walkers joined the PepsiCo family in 1989 and makes around 10 million bags of crisps a day and is worth around £436 million and enjoyed by over 10 million people in the UK every day.

For the first time, Territory Planner® will allow them to plan journeys by their salesmen to optimise call lists to reduce the time spent travelling, giving them more time with their customers and improving the merchandising in store. Walkers are now planning to also reschedule all their van sales journeys to gain the same benefits.

121 Show the Art of Logistics and Listening

04 February 2011

121’s MD, Chris Sisson, will be under the spotlight at Logistics Link South to hear directly from company owners, Finance Directors and Transport Managers about how they would like to be able to improve their transport operations. Chris will be at the exhibition in Sandown Park, Esher, to listen - and to advise businesses on how to deal with their current problems and to discuss the opportunities available to them.

The pressure to cut costs and drive business growth, to maintain the bottom line while managing all the daily challenges that arise, can be difficult to bear, especially if a business has scant resources in an ever-changing operational landscape.

How 121 can help. They are the only company in the UK trusted to deliver Roadnet® to its customers. They also believe the delivery makes all the difference.

The Roadnet™ Transportation Suite is a comprehensive toolbox to plan loads, optimise routes, balance territories, provide performance statistics, and show on the screen where your vehicles are — and also where they should be and the differences between planned, actual and predicted arrival times.

A business can save time and energy by reducing routing time, leaving staff free to tackle other elements of the day as well as to build a longer-term transport strategy.

121 Systems' Delivery Gets a New Year Boost

19 January 2011

Heading in to any new year is often seen as a new start and none so much as 121 Systems who are the only company in the UK to deliver the Roadnet™ Transportation Suite formerly developed by UPS Logistics Technologies, now acquired by Thoma Bravo.

Private equity firm Thoma Bravo actually completed two high profile deals running up to Christmas with the acquisition of the software logistics division of UPS, and the $2.2bn take-over of software corporation Novell.

Renamed Roadnet Technologies, the Roadnet Transportation Suite covers transportation routing and fleet management systems, coordinating 200,000 vehicles through 3,300 installations internationally, providing territory planning, route plans, real-time continuous route optimization and real-time GPS wireless dispatch management.

Managing Director of 121 Systems, Chris Sisson believes the acquisition by Thoma Bravo will create greater investment into research and development in the software and commented “The complete logistics system that we deliver to UK organisations who are involved in transportation management will see continued investment and growth by Roadnet Technologies. 121 Systems intend to accelerate the growth of Roadnet and strengthen the company's leadership in the transportation management solutions market."

Roadnet Reduces Carbon Footprints

07 October 2009

The Roadnet™ Transportation Suite, available from 121 Systems, now features carbon emissions reporting.

Chris Sisson, Managing Director of 121 Systems Ltd, said: ’Routing and scheduling systems have always helped to reduce carbon emissions. By reducing your fleet size and the total miles travelled to get the job done, you reduce carbon as you reduce cost. But more and more end recipients of goods want to know the carbon footprint of the goods they receive. Roadnet will now calculate the carbon footprint of every route driven, which is a valuable aid to any business with a measured carbon reduction programme.’

Using Roadnet, expanding operations have the opportunity to increase productivity without increasing their fleet size, thus keeping carbon emissions down even when business is good.

With increased awareness of the need to protect the environment, and more and more stringent legislation on vehicle emissions, there is an increasing need to measure the carbon footprint of transport operations.

Transport operators have always wanted to save fuel, but have not easily been able to measure the carbon emissions of their operations until now.
