121 Systems Help Clients go for gold at the London Olympics 2012
23 April 2012
It’s time to get your ‘Pulse’ racing; the London Olympics 2012 are almost upon us! With 121 Systems’ new software for handheld devices and transport management software, we explain how our Clients can go for gold during this manic period!
121 Systems Help Clients go for gold at the London Olympics 2012
Are you a qualifier or just a spectator? With 121 Systems transport management software we guarantee you won’t fall at the final hurdle.
Our clients are smart enough to know that in order to be in complete control throughout the Olympic Games duration they need to have the right tools. Pulse provides a mechanism for a driver, transport office and Roadnet Transportation Suite to be in constant data and voice communication throughout every stage of a driver’s route. It not only offers projected arrival times, location of the delivery vehicle, consistent and accurate address monitoring but much more.
Liam Northfield from the Freight Transport Association has been telling people to think of the games period as a ‘three month Christmas period’1. With an estimated 8.8 million spectators clogging up London transport arteries, and miles of London’s roads being recommissioned as the ‘Olympic Route Network’, it is essential that transport departments are fully prepared.
So, a 109 mile route encompassing the Central London Zone is going to encounter changes such as:
- Changes to traffic signals
- Restricted turns into side roads
- Suspension of parking and loading bays
- Suspension of pedestrian crossings
- Games Lanes
What this will mean for our Clients and what difficulties are they likely to face?
Of course, our clients’ main concern will be delivering to their customers on time but if not planned for, the following will have a HUGE impact.
- Current route plans won’t take into account the Olympic Route Network.
- If those whose routes don’t usually enter London but due to the Olympics increasing demand their customers have asked for extra orders to be delivered within this area , will all their fleet be compliant with the new tougher Low Emissions Zone standards which took effect in January?
- If they plan on initiating nightly operations, do operating centres/depots have environmental restrictions regarding servicing customers at night? If deliveries/collections are to be done at night, are these drop-off points within residential zones? For a code of practice relating to work at night please visit tfl.gov.uk for more information.
- London Lorry Control Scheme restricts over 18 tonne lorries at night. Will they consider using different vehicles? Using Sub-18 tonne vehicles will be costly as well as adding to the possibility of congestion within the city at night.
- Drivers will be unaware of new routes including changes to delivery points and loading bays
- Increased deliveries means more staffing issues
Pulse and Roadnet Transportation Suite have given our clients the head start needed when planning for the Olympics.
Redesigned Routes
Roadnet Transportation Suite including Territory Planner, Pulse, Roadnet and Mobilecast have allowed our clients’ transport departments to reconfigure new routes, taking into account the Olympic Route Network & all the changes it will bring. All the new road layouts have been meticulously redesigned leaving enough time for any additional changes to be made as they occur. In March, the Transport for London department released a ‘Games Data Layer’, which includes specific information for each day of the games including a database of postcodes affected. What this means is that our Clients can now input this information into Territory Planner which will then provide a detailed route plan for all drivers on all game days.
Driver Support
Drivers will be fully supported by Pulse as the mechanism can retrieve pre planned route data from Mobilecast which will guide them along new routes with the embedded satellite navigation. Pulse will also prove useful to drivers and transport departments if drivers come across alternative delivery locations that have not been captured during the initial route redesign as they can geocode (using GPS Location Technology) these new delivery locations which can in turn be used on future deliveries throughout this period.
Regardless of the amount of pre-planning our clients do for the Olympics, it is still reasonable to assume that any situation can occur during this time. It is essential that drivers and transport offices are able to clearly communicate with each other. If a driver needs support in terms of finding alternate routes, the embedded phone within Pulse will prove invaluable should they need that assistance.
Nightly Operations
Should our clients want to adapt their current operations for the games period and deliver into affected areas during the night when congestion will be reduced, then they will have to consider the points mentioned earlier. If depots/operating centres have environmental restrictions regarding servicing customers at night, our clients can customise their scheduling by using [Territory Planner] and Roadnet to avoid these depots and use others within reasonable distance or alternatively add them into the plan when time restrictions have passed.
It is also important not to overlook the London Lorry Control scheme that restricts over 18 tonne lorries delivering at night. Using Territory Planner, Clients can schedule alternative vehicles to make those journeys and consider resending the over 18 tonne vehicles to service other territories that do not have certain vehicle restrictions (It is essential to remember that vehicles above a certain weight require an O Licence, this is to ensure these vehicles, and the operating centres where they are kept, are run safely and with consideration for the environment). This may help to keep vehicle downtime to a minimum. The only problem with this is it could prove costly as more resources, such as extra drivers, will be needed.
Equipment Planning
If Clients need to add more vehicles to service these areas or if they have to deliver to these areas when normally they don’t, they will have to take into consideration the new Low Emissions Zone Standards. These regulations only allow vehicles to enter all roads within Greater London, those at Heathrow and parts of the M1 and M4 that meet certain requirements. There is a vehicle checker tool that can be found on www.tfl.gov.uk for those who need more information on this. If our clients need to commit alternative vehicles to these routes, they can utilise Roadnet and assign the correct vehicles.
Staffing Issues
The huge influx of people entering London during the Olympics is going to create higher demand for resources and increase waste. It is possible that those companies, who are operating collections and deliveries inside the city centre and the areas that encompass the Olympic Route Network, are going to need to increase staff levels during this time.
This means that Transport Managers are going to need to be in complete control and will be reassured by the fact that they have fully integrated tools to help them manage their resources effectively. Using Roadnet Transportation Suite provides them with a level of security in terms of successfully juggling equipment, staff, time slots and all the restrictions that are going to come with the Olympics, into optimised routes.
Maybe throughout this period our Clients will have more outgoings due to staffing and overtime but by successfully using 121 Systems’ route scheduling software they will save fuel and time as they will have deployed fully optimised routes specifically redesigned for overseeing the London Olympics 2012. Not only this, but they will still maintain high quality customer service, which is what it is all about, isn’t it?

121 Systems Introduce New Pulse Software for Handheld Device
19 April 2012
Is it a phone? Is it satellite navigation? No, it’s Pulse! A handheld device that will exceed expectations. Your transport department and customer service will wonder how they ever coped without it!
With 121 Systems’ background knowledge of the logistics industry and understanding of the day to day issues that occur in transport management, we have been able to develop a tool that will not only benefit your transport managers and drivers but your business as a whole too.
Pulse provides a mechanism for a driver, transport office and Roadnet Transportation Suite to be in constant data and voice communication throughout every stage of a driver’s route. It not only offers projected arrival times, location of the delivery vehicle, consistent and accurate address monitoring but much more.
Pulse retrieves information from Mobilecast which also works with multiple Windows wireless devices, including smartphones and industrial rugged mobile handheld computers built to withstand the tough environments your drivers face every day.
It will become your drivers’ wingman.
Pulse holds many different applications that allow your driver to maintain a level of control throughout the delivery process.
Put yourself in the shoes of a driver. What issues do they face on a daily basis?
- Access Problems?
An item for collection is behind closed gates and no one is around to open them. He can take a photo using Pulse’s inbuilt camera functionality. This confirms the dilemma and also informs the transport manager and customer services, keeping everyone in the loop.
- Incorrect Delivery/Collection Locations?
Pulseallows drivers to Geocode (using GPS Location Technology) the location to where the Actual drop off/collection point is as opposed to the ‘front door’ of a building. This is then recorded for future routes allowing stop time to be reduced.
- Damaged Goods?
A customer has refused a delivery, the box is damaged. The driver can insure himself by taking a photo and automatically relay it back to customer services or the transport department who can then provide a solution to the problem.
- Excess Paperwork?
A driver is forever juggling paper and clipboards. Pulse is a fully integrated system that allows him to do everything electronically. Daily surveys such as vehicle checks, take notes relating to delivery information and customer ‘signed for’s’ can all be done via Pulse. This will reduce driver admin time, in return generating more time on the road.
- Nobody ‘At Home’
Pulse can be set up to allow the driver to call the customer but limit the amount of information he can see, such as the phone number itself.
Transport Managers will recognise they are missing a crucial element in daily transport operations.
Transport managers often come across daily challenges coordinating a fleet of vehicles and deliveries. The Pulse tool will allow them to be in complete control of operations throughout the whole delivery process for the whole of their fleet!
121 Systems guarantee that by using Pulse you will see an improvement in the following:
- Route Compliance
Is your transport manager constantly aware of his drivers’ location at ALL times? Does he know if his deliveries are on schedule ALL of the time? Is he using his drivers to their full potential? This system will enable him to monitor and react to service and operational issues as they arise! It will also help him identify where potential efficiencies can be made to improve service levels, reduce operational costs, minimise fuel usage as well as maximise driver utilisation.
- Time Window Compliance
Are your customers receiving the best possible delivery service? In order to meet customer delivery expectations, awareness of what is happening as it happens is essential! With Pulse your transport manager can physically monitor the route plan and be constantly aware of route changes or unidentifiable stops. These exceptions will impact on your customer service levels but this tool will allow you to take pre emptive action and alert customers should the expected delivery time’s change.
- Time & Mileage Compliance
Pulse identifies deviation from the route plan and captures route information such as the routes where drivers are taking longer than expected or using longer routes. This information is crucial when trying to reduce operational costs.
- Route Plan Vs. Actual
Are your planned routes totally efficient? Pulse captures real-time location data from the PDA and compares planned delivery schedule with the actual execution of the plan. This provides real-time analysis of operational key performance indicators and predictive alerts of likely delivery failures.
- Driver Debriefs
Have you considered that by reducing driver administration time you will allow your drivers to spend more time on the road? Pulse automatically generates driver end of day debrief reports as soon as they have logged off for the day. These reports compare planned and actual activity; they highlight missed stops and mileage expectations. The PDA System captures data at all stops on route including any exceptions. All of this means that your drivers will spend less time sweating the small stuff and more time increasing profitability.
Pulse isn’t the same as every other handheld device on the market today. It is a bespoke piece of software designed to be installed and set up to meet every individual need and requirement based on how your company operates.
Pulse will integrate easily into existing corporate intranet sites and CRM applications.
At 121 Systems we pride ourselves on our extensive knowledge and expertise in logistical software design and implementation. However, we do not purely focus on this as we believe in providing a complete service for all our clients and ensure support throughout every step of the installation process and beyond!

Grocer FreshDirect jump on Roadnet’s NetScheduler Software Bandwagon!
26 March 2012
Could you provide 60,000 timely deliveries on a weekly basis? FreshDirect did!
A customer’s ability to select their own delivery date and timeframe provides daily challenges that Roadnet® NetScheduler vehicle scheduling software solves for New York-based company.
Baltimore, MD (March 26, 2012) The weekly delivery of more than 60,000 grocery orders (many containing perishable items) becomes a continuous race-against-the-clock for FreshDirect, an online grocery store servicing residential-based customers and offices, located in the New York city metropolitan region. The challenge to consistently deliver food items, heavy beverage cases and dry goods became increasingly complicated based on their customers’ ability to select their own delivery date and time window.
At FreshDirect, which initially entered the New York marketplace ten years ago, the route and cargo is completely different from the day before. The company formally depended on the use of a manual system that was extremely labour-intensive and offered only limited scalability. Every day is a matter of productivity maximising our truck utilisation and deliveries per hour while absolutely meeting our customer obligations, explained Rod Mathey, senior transportation analyst at FreshDirect.
The company adopted the use of Roadnet’s NetScheduler route scheduling product specifically engineered to match the needs of the home delivery market which - unlike other customers - must place as many deliveries as possible into each route. The vehicle routing and scheduling system has the intelligence to present available windows to each customer throughout the order period and up until the route is filled to capacity. The fleet routing and scheduling software can also generate discounts or offer incentives to encourage customers to choose windows that optimize the route.
Roadnet’s NetScheduler logistics scheduling solution also provides FreshDirect with discretionary flexibility to adjust its routes and meet specific customer demands. If a route fills to capacity, the company can utilise Roadnet’s vehicle routing Editor to "force" deliveries for its best customers by recommending and evaluating time slots manually.
Of course, we have exception processes, so we can set aside capacity for our most loyal customers or adapt to a truck breakdown, explains Mathey. We can also add driver input into the system if there are conditions in a neighbourhood that make deliveries more time-consuming, for example.
The company credits NetScheduler’s route scheduling automation and intelligence with an estimated 8% overall improvement in routing efficiency and on-time delivery improvements of 3%.
Roadnet’s NetScheduler routing software has also enabled the company to expand into less dense suburban areas without increasing costs per delivery.
NetScheduler is part of the Roadnet Transportation Suite that was specifically created to address the needs of fleet owners with a 100% dynamic business model, stated Len Kennedy, Chief Executive Officer of Roadnet Technologies. FreshDirect was further challenged with its base of operations contained in highly-defined transportation network with dense vehicular use, as well as its businessof delivering perishable items. FreshDirect reports a significant return on investment with this product, as well as helping fuel a corporate expansion, he added.
Since 1983, Roadnet Technologies has been a worldwide provider of fleet management software tools and GPS tracking solutions for hundreds of thousands of vehicles in a broad range of industries such as foodservice, beverage, paper, medical, waste management, textile and energy. Roadnet’s fleet management applications and logistics software provides strategic territory and street-level route plans, multi-stop vehicle routing and scheduling, wireless dispatch, vehicle telematics, fuel management, and real-time vehicle GPS tracking.

Roadnet powers up fleet scheduling for G&P
14 February 2012
G&P, the UK’s leading collector and recycler of waste batteries, has powered up its output to 170%, with the fleet scheduling benefits of Roadnet® from 121 Systems.
Since the software was first installed eight years ago, the company continues to be energised by the impact of the logistics software on its costs and operations.
Thanks to the three modules of the Roadnet Transportation Suite - Roadnet, Mobilecast® and Territory Planner® - fleet scheduling for the company’s complex range of vehicles and routes is anything but flat.
G&P are part of the world’s largest recycling group – EcoBat Technologies Group. Collecting and recycling waste batteries is a complicated process, with no less than four stages. But Roadnet’s logistics software allows G&P to meet the demands of all its customers at every level and transport goods in the most efficient way.
With vehicles ranging from 44 tonne articulated lorries to 3.5 tonne vans, it is important for G&P to be able to schedule the right routes for each vehicle type. Roadnet has allowed the company to do just that - and meet a battery of demanding legal environmental requirements at the same time.
With all these benefits and an increase of 170% in output, installing Roadnet has proven to be a bright idea that has energised G&P’s fleet scheduling.
Vehicle Routing Company Roadnet Technologies Announces Release of RTS v3.50
15 December 2011
We are pleased to announce that Roadnet Transportation Suite v3.50 is now in limited release. All of our new customers will receive this version as well as any customer interested in upgrading to the latest and greatest in logistics technology. This version of our route planning software has several enhancements that are briefly noted below.
An improved Service Time Maintenance Tool provides better clarity when updating a Location’s service time with actual data captured by drivers. The route optimisation tool can also be used by companies that do pick-up and retrieval routes, providing greater flexibility across several different industries.
Due to evolving business models and governmental regulations regarding workers and breaks management, additional functional enhancements have been made to expand the Automatic Breaks Management capability in Roadnet®.
When there’s a truck full of cartons, unfortunately sometimes one or two get overlooked at the point of delivery. As more deliveries are made and the piles dwindle, drivers may find items that were meant to be delivered to stops that were already done. Now, rather than returning these items back to the depot to have them sent out on the next day’s route, you can use the Return to Stop and Redeliver option in MobileCast®.
If you’re a company that has a more stable routing model, you might be routing with Territory Planner®. In that case, analysis enhancements have been made such as adding a new Location Delivery Cost report and being able to differentiate Depots in the map view.
In addition to these new features, we are introducing a new Mid-Route Sourcing capability for the solid waste industry. This vehicle routing feature culminates hundreds of hours of research and development to solve the complex problem of routing and servicing roll-off containers a big challenge for solid waste companies not adequately handled with standard delivery routing algorithms. Stay tuned for more information to come in future blog posts regarding the new feature for the solid waste industry.

Roadnet Technologies Named To World's Largest Software Company List
23 November 2011
Baltimore, MD (November 15, 2011) – Leading transportation software provider Roadnet Technologies was included in Software Magazine’s Software 500 ranking of the world’s largest software and service providers. The ranking, which is based on total worldwide software and services revenue for 2010, can be viewed at www.softwaremag.com.
Roadnet Technologies, a leader in route planning and scheduling software, was named in the “Top 10 Companies in the $30 - $50 million” and “Top 10 Overall in Revenue Growth” categories, based on the achievement of $35 million in software and service revenue and a 141.2% growth rate last year. Approximately 27 percent of the 2011 Software 500 companies are privately-held and more than 100 appear on the list in 2011 for the first time – two distinctions held by the Baltimore-based company.
Roadnet Technologies provides worldwide fleet management and route optimization solutions for hundreds of thousands of vehicles in a broad range of industries such as foodservice, beverage, paper, medical, waste management, textile and energy. Roadnet’s fleet management applications and logistics software provides strategic territory and street-level route plans, multi-stop vehicle routing and scheduling, real-time wireless dispatch, vehicle telematics, fuel management, and real-time vehicle GPS tracking.
“We consider this national recognition an extremely high honor and attribute this achievement to the continued strong efforts and successes of our entire team,” explained Len Kennedy, Chief Executive Officer of Roadnet Technologies, a leader in vehicle routing and fleet management software. “Our company has continued this momentum through the first half of 2011, which represented the best two quarters in our 25-year history based on same-year sales volume and a 97% customer retention rate,” he added.
“The Software 500 is a quick reference of vendor viability,” stated John P. Desmond, editor of Software Magazine. “The 2011 results show that revenue growth in the software and services industry was healthy, with an approximate 10% growth from the previous year’s list,” he added.
Founded in 1983, Roadnet Technologies was acquired by United Parcel Service in 1986 and was known as UPS Logistics Technologies for more than 25 years. Thoma Bravo LLC, a $4 billion private equity firm headquartered in San Francisco, purchased the UPS division in late 2010 and re-established the corporate name.
British Lead set to boost routing and scheduling with Roadnet
01 August 2011
British Lead is to use Roadnet™ from 121 Systems to plan its UK wide delivery and collection routes.
British Lead produce new lead sheeting – with each sheet being almost 100% recycled. The lead sheeting is refined using scrap materials. These resources are collected from scrap collection points or demolition sites. Once new lead sheets have been produced, British Lead will use Roadnet to optimise their efficiency when delivering finished goods to their customers.
As part of the Eco Bat Technologies group - the world’s largest recyclers of lead - the company is keen to boost its routing and scheduling.
The company has been recycling scrap lead since 1932 and the new planning software is likely to be an important part of its future. Thanks to Roadnet’s routing and scheduling technology, British Lead’s fleet of vehicles can be routed more effectively from its four depots. This will lead to a reduction in the amount of time spent on planning routes.
It’s not only the bottom line that will benefit from the added routing and scheduling muscle provided by Roadnet. The software will allow the company to manage the movement of lead - from the collection of scrap materials to the delivery of finished goods to customers. Environmental impacts play a major part in British Lead. Having been accredited an ISO14001 for their environmental engagement reflects this priority.
With the use of Roadnet from 121 Systems, it looks as though British Lead will continue to lead the way in its industry.
Biffa Reduced mileage with more Intelligent Routing
11 July 2011
With 64 operating centres and hundreds of vehicles, waste management leader Biffa was keen to keep a lid on its fuel costs. A successful initial trial of Roadnet in 2009 gave the business a great way to do just that. In the trial at one of its operating centres, Biffa saw a 30% cut in its fuel bills, plus:
- Reduced mileage and more intelligent routing- leading to lower CO2 emissions and better customer service.
- Overtime almost eliminated- Biffa kept the same number of staff while increasing its productivity.
Great results, but they’re just the start. Biffa now plans to roll Roadnet™ out across the whole business, covering its routes for commercial waste, glass recycling and dry mixed recycling. The company estimates that the whole system will pay for itself in just 18 months. The rubbish cost cutting looks likely to continue - 121 Systems is currently working on ways to help Biffa lower the costs of moving its skips.
Andy Robertson, Logistics Manager at Biffa, said:
“I would recommend Roadnet from 121 Systems to anyone struggling with unwieldy routing problems. I can’t fault the system or the customer services team, who have been extremely helpful from start to finish.”
Walkers Crisps Merchandising Gets a Boost
11 February 2011
Walkers Crisps merchandising gets a boost from Roadnet™ Transportation Suite.
The UK’s favourite crisp brand, Walkers will be using logistical software Territory Planner™ to allow them to plan sales journeys. PepsiCo UK & Ireland who own Walkers, have purchased the sophisticated kit, which is part of the Roadnet Transportation Suite.
Walkers joined the PepsiCo family in 1989 and makes around 10 million bags of crisps a day and is worth around £436 million and enjoyed by over 10 million people in the UK every day.
For the first time, Territory Planner® will allow them to plan journeys by their salesmen to optimise call lists to reduce the time spent travelling, giving them more time with their customers and improving the merchandising in store. Walkers are now planning to also reschedule all their van sales journeys to gain the same benefits.
121 Show the Art of Logistics and Listening
04 February 2011
121’s MD, Chris Sisson, will be under the spotlight at Logistics Link South to hear directly from company owners, Finance Directors and Transport Managers about how they would like to be able to improve their transport operations. Chris will be at the exhibition in Sandown Park, Esher, to listen - and to advise businesses on how to deal with their current problems and to discuss the opportunities available to them.
The pressure to cut costs and drive business growth, to maintain the bottom line while managing all the daily challenges that arise, can be difficult to bear, especially if a business has scant resources in an ever-changing operational landscape.
How 121 can help. They are the only company in the UK trusted to deliver Roadnet® to its customers. They also believe the delivery makes all the difference.
The Roadnet™ Transportation Suite is a comprehensive toolbox to plan loads, optimise routes, balance territories, provide performance statistics, and show on the screen where your vehicles are — and also where they should be and the differences between planned, actual and predicted arrival times.
A business can save time and energy by reducing routing time, leaving staff free to tackle other elements of the day as well as to build a longer-term transport strategy.

121 Systems' Delivery Gets a New Year Boost
19 January 2011
Heading in to any new year is often seen as a new start and none so much as 121 Systems who are the only company in the UK to deliver the Roadnet™ Transportation Suite formerly developed by UPS Logistics Technologies, now acquired by Thoma Bravo.
Private equity firm Thoma Bravo actually completed two high profile deals running up to Christmas with the acquisition of the software logistics division of UPS, and the $2.2bn take-over of software corporation Novell.
Renamed Roadnet Technologies, the Roadnet Transportation Suite covers transportation routing and fleet management systems, coordinating 200,000 vehicles through 3,300 installations internationally, providing territory planning, route plans, real-time continuous route optimization and real-time GPS wireless dispatch management.
Managing Director of 121 Systems, Chris Sisson believes the acquisition by Thoma Bravo will create greater investment into research and development in the software and commented “The complete logistics system that we deliver to UK organisations who are involved in transportation management will see continued investment and growth by Roadnet Technologies. 121 Systems intend to accelerate the growth of Roadnet and strengthen the company's leadership in the transportation management solutions market."
Roadnet Reduces Carbon Footprints
07 October 2009
The Roadnet™ Transportation Suite, available from 121 Systems, now features carbon emissions reporting.
Chris Sisson, Managing Director of 121 Systems Ltd, said: ’Routing and scheduling systems have always helped to reduce carbon emissions. By reducing your fleet size and the total miles travelled to get the job done, you reduce carbon as you reduce cost. But more and more end recipients of goods want to know the carbon footprint of the goods they receive. Roadnet will now calculate the carbon footprint of every route driven, which is a valuable aid to any business with a measured carbon reduction programme.’
Using Roadnet, expanding operations have the opportunity to increase productivity without increasing their fleet size, thus keeping carbon emissions down even when business is good.
With increased awareness of the need to protect the environment, and more and more stringent legislation on vehicle emissions, there is an increasing need to measure the carbon footprint of transport operations.
Transport operators have always wanted to save fuel, but have not easily been able to measure the carbon emissions of their operations until now.
